Fecal Occult Blood Test

In our office, we offer fecal occult blood testing to screen for colon cancer.  You take the test kit home to collect a sample then mail or deliver the test tube back to us for interpretation.

Screening for colon cancer is recommended for those 50 years old and older and for other certain high-risk groups.  There are several screening methods, but colonoscopy and fecal occult blood tests are done most commonly.  We can help you arrange a colonoscopy (performed by a specialist), but we also offer the lower-cost alternative of fecal occult blood testing.

The fecal occult blood test detects microscopic amounts of blood in the stool (feces).

The fecal occult blood test is comparable to colonoscopy for detecting colon cancer.  Fecal occult blood tests are recommended annually.  Colonoscopies are usually done every 10 years.
